A
Ashtakavarga
अष्टकवर्ग“Eight divisions”A system that assigns benefic points (bindus) to each sign based on the transit positions of eight factors (7 planets + Lagna). Used to assess the strength of planets in specific signs and predict transit results.
Ayanamsha
अयनांश“Precession degree”The angular difference between the tropical (Western) and sidereal (Vedic) zodiacs, caused by the precession of equinoxes. The most commonly used values are Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), Raman, and Krishnamurti.
Arudha Pada
आरूढ पद“Mounted point”A Jaimini astrology concept. The Arudha of a house is found by counting the same distance from its lord as the lord is from the house. Arudha Lagna (AL) shows how the world perceives you, distinct from the true Lagna which represents the real self.
B
Bhava
भाव“House”One of the 12 houses in a horoscope, each governing a specific area of life. The 1st house (Lagna) represents self, the 7th represents partnerships, the 10th represents career, and so on.
C
Chara Karaka
चर कारक“Variable significator”In Jaimini astrology, the planet with the highest degree in any sign becomes the Atmakaraka (soul significator), followed by Amatyakaraka (career), Bhratrikaraka (siblings), and so on. These eight variable significators provide a unique layer of chart interpretation.
Combustion
अस्तंगत“Burnt by the Sun”When a planet comes too close to the Sun (within a specific degree range that varies by planet), it becomes 'combust' — weakened and unable to express its significations fully. The Moon is combust within 12°, Mars within 17°, and other planets within varying ranges.
D
Dasha
दशा“Planetary period”A time-based system assigning rulership of life periods to specific planets. The most widely used is Vimshottari Dasha (120-year cycle), where each planet rules a period proportional to its nakshatra allocation.
Dosha
दोष“Affliction / flaw”A planetary combination considered challenging or inauspicious. Common doshas include Manglik Dosha (Mars in 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house), Kaal Sarp Dosha (all planets between Rahu and Ketu), and Pitra Dosha.
Dusthana
दुस्थान“Difficult house”Houses 6, 8, and 12 — considered challenging placements. The 6th governs enemies and disease, the 8th governs death and transformation, and the 12th governs loss and liberation. However, these houses also hold potential for spiritual growth.
G
Graha
ग्रह“Planet / seizer”The nine celestial bodies (Navagraha) used in Vedic astrology: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (North Node), and Ketu (South Node).
J
Jyotish
ज्योतिष“Science of light”The traditional Hindu system of astrology, one of the six Vedangas (limbs of the Vedas). It encompasses three branches: Siddhanta (astronomy), Samhita (mundane), and Hora (horoscopy/natal astrology).
K
Karana
करण“Half-tithi”One of the five limbs of the Panchang. Each tithi has two karanas (half-tithis), making 60 karanas in a lunar month. There are 11 karana types, with Vishti (Bhadra) Karana considered inauspicious for starting new activities.
Ketu
केतु“South lunar node”The south node of the Moon, representing spirituality, liberation, past-life karma, and detachment. Ketu is considered a shadow planet (chhaya graha) and is always exactly opposite Rahu in the chart.
Kundali
कुण्डली“Birth chart / horoscope”The map of the sky at the exact moment and location of birth, showing the positions of all nine planets across the 12 houses and 12 signs of the sidereal zodiac.
Kendra
केन्द्र“Angular house”Houses 1, 4, 7, and 10 — the most powerful positions in a chart. Planets in Kendra houses gain directional strength and have the greatest capacity to produce results, especially benefics like Jupiter and Venus.
L
Lagna
लग्न“Ascendant / rising sign”The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time of birth. The Lagna is the most important point in a Vedic chart, determining the layout of all 12 houses and profoundly influencing personality and life path.
M
Mahadasha
महादशा“Major period”The primary planetary period in the Vimshottari Dasha system. Each planet rules a major period of specific length (e.g., Sun 6 years, Moon 10 years, Jupiter 16 years, Saturn 19 years), during which its themes dominate life events.
Manglik
माङ्गलिक“Mars-afflicted”A person whose birth chart has Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Lagna, Moon, or Venus. Traditionally considered significant for marriage compatibility, though many classical exceptions and cancellations exist.
Muhurta
मुहूर्त“Auspicious timing”The branch of Vedic astrology dealing with selecting the most favourable date and time to begin important activities such as marriage, business ventures, travel, or house construction.
N
Nakshatra
नक्षत्र“Lunar mansion / star”One of the 27 (or 28) divisions of the ecliptic, each spanning 13°20'. Each nakshatra has a ruling deity, planet lord, and specific qualities. The Moon's nakshatra at birth determines the starting Dasha period.
Navagraha
नवग्रह“Nine planets”The nine celestial influences in Vedic astrology: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. Unlike Western astrology, Vedic astrology does not use Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto as primary chart factors.
P
Panchang
पञ्चाङ्ग“Five limbs”The traditional Vedic calendar system based on five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (Sun-Moon angular combination), and Karana (half-tithi). Used daily for determining auspicious and inauspicious timings.
Prashna
प्रश्न“Question / horary”A branch of Vedic astrology where a chart is cast for the exact moment a question is asked, rather than for a person's birth. The resulting chart is interpreted to answer the querent's specific question.
R
Rahu
राहु“North lunar node”The north node of the Moon, representing worldly desires, obsession, ambition, and karmic lessons to be learned. Rahu amplifies the qualities of the house and sign it occupies, often creating intense but ultimately transformative experiences.
Rashi
राशि“Zodiac sign”One of the 12 signs of the sidereal zodiac: Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius), and Meena (Pisces).
Retrograde
वक्री“Backward-moving”When a planet appears to move backward in the zodiac from Earth's perspective. In Vedic astrology, retrograde planets are considered strong but express their energy in unconventional or internalised ways. Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde in their true motion.
S
Shadbala
षड्बल“Six-fold strength”A comprehensive system for calculating planetary strength based on six components: positional (Sthana), directional (Dig), temporal (Kala), motional (Cheshta), natural (Naisargika), and aspectual (Drik) strength.
Sandhi
सन्धि“Junction point”The transitional zone between two signs, houses, or dasha periods. Planets at sign junctions (within 1° of the boundary) are considered weak. Dasha Sandhi refers to the turbulent period when one planetary period transitions to the next.
T
Tithi
तिथि“Lunar day”A unit of time based on the angular distance between the Sun and Moon (each 12° = one tithi). There are 30 tithis in a lunar month, 15 in the waxing (Shukla) and 15 in the waning (Krishna) phase. Tithis are fundamental to the Panchang calendar.
Trikona
त्रिकोण“Trine house”Houses 1, 5, and 9 — considered the most auspicious houses. The 5th house governs intelligence, creativity, and children; the 9th governs fortune, dharma, and higher knowledge. Planets connecting Kendras and Trikonas form powerful Raj Yogas.
U
Upachaya
उपचय“Growth houses”Houses 3, 6, 10, and 11 — called growth houses because malefic planets placed here tend to grow stronger over time and produce increasingly positive results, especially after the age of 30-35.
V
Varga
वर्ग“Divisional chart”Charts derived by dividing each sign into smaller portions to examine specific life areas in detail. Key vargas include D-9 (Navamsha, for marriage), D-10 (Dashamsha, for career), D-12 (Dwadashamsha, for parents), and D-60 (Shashtiamsha, for past karma).
Varshaphal
वर्षफल“Annual chart / solar return”A predictive technique that casts a chart for the exact moment the Sun returns to its natal position each year. The Varshaphal chart, along with its Muntha, Varshapati (year lord), and Tajika Yogas, provides insights for the coming year.
Vastu
वास्तु“Dwelling / architecture”The traditional Vedic science of architecture and spatial arrangement. In an astrological context, Vastu analysis examines how the directional balance and elemental harmony of a birth chart relate to the individual's ideal living and working environments.
Y
Yoga
योग“Combination / union”A specific combination of planets, signs, or houses that produces a defined result. There are hundreds of named yogas in classical texts, including Raj Yogas (power), Dhana Yogas (wealth), Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas (great personality), and many more.
